Global Art Projects

Updated: Mar 20, 2021

By Lucinda Parfett

At this moment in writing there are several global art projects currently in motions. Many of the projects featured here are participatory projects, involving people from all around the world regardless of whether or not they have any prior experience in art. In times of self isolation when many of us can be feeling lonely and separate from the community around us, these projects are a great way to join another community and feel involved in something big.

One of my particular favourites that I first came across on The Guardian UK website is apart of the on going 'Cities and Memories'. Featuring soundscapes from across the world. Dating over the last five years and involving over 70 countries, they have a amassed a large database of the ever changing sounds. Through this they have been able to document how cities have reacted to the corona-virus by listening to the audio clips that have been uploaded.

'The Global Art Project' was founded in 1993 by American Artist Katherine Josten. The aim of the project is to create a culture of piece while emphasising the idea that "We are all one". They have been nominated for a UNESCO award, and since it's formation has involved over 155,000 artists from around the world. The global art project supports community exhibitions and helps artists get their work seen. For more information on how to get involved please visit their website: http://www.globalartproject.org/about/projectdescription.html

The inside out project is a participatory project changing our perceptions of identity. Through this project a participant shares their project along with their other group members. These are then sent into the project's website. The participants will then receive posters that they can put up within their community. However you can also choose to print the poster's yourself. Photos of the posters put up around the community are then uploaded to the website as a digital archive of communities around the world getting involved.

A picture speaks a thousand words. That's definite true for Photo Voice. A UK based organisation that also works internationally, runs participatory projects alongside charities. The projects that they run help communicate issues of which are underrepresented in the media, or issues that an individual or community is facing. They have been running for 15 years, and in that time have helped thousands of people get their voices heard. To find out more about this great organisation please check out their website: https://photovoice.org/about-us/
